The emphatic “do”

In English, the word “do” can be used as an auxiliary, verb and a noun.

As an auxiliary,”do” is used to:

A. form a question in the simple present.

Form:     wh question + do + subject + main verb …?

Example: – What do you do in your spare time?

The first “do” is an auxiliary while the second one is the main verb of the sentence.

B. give emphasis to a positive verb (make the meaning stronger).

Example: – I do respect my parents.

Form:      subject + do+ main verb + object.

Note: The auxiliary “did” accomplishes the same function as “do” but in the past context.

Examlpe: -I did send my application before the deadline.

Form:  subject + did+ main verb + object.
