Decline an invitation

Meaning:

Say no politely to an offer.

Example:

They invited me for lunch, but I refused / declined their invitation.

Notes:

• Both verbs can be used but depending on the purpose set by the user.
• Refuse sounds “firm” and emotionless and doesn’t let some room for more negotiation.
• Decline sounds formal and more polite and sometimes tactful.
