When Hope Defeats Cancer

The doctor was sitting behind his desk reading the report sent by the laboratory. He was calm and serious and in full concentration. After a few minutes he raised his head and looked at his patient who was sitting in front of him waiting for his comment, he said:

“Dear lady, there is nothing to hide. You have a cancer. All the diagnoses prove that.”

He kept his eyes contact in order to detect her reaction, but the elderly woman didn’t show any dramatic reaction. She seemed to have been prepared to receive the horrible news. She said: “Praise to God”

He nodded his head and said: “Yes,Praise to God, almighty”

The elderly woman asked: ” is it a recently developed tumour or an old one?”

He answered: ” I am afraid! You have been having a cancer for a long period”

“Are there any recovery prospects?”

“”Absolutely yes!”

He said that without thinking, maybe because he had no other choice but keeping hope and saying what he had said”

Amina came back home and disclosed the unwelcome news to her Four children.

Amina was leading a tranquil and ordinary life with her husband. One of her two boys was living with them and rejected the idea of leaving his parents’ home although he had his own flat. For him the warmth of his parents couldn’t be replaceable and their blessing would lead him to all kind of blessings. His three siblings had their own small families and were living a peaceful life. The whole big family was used to gathering on weekends and feasts.

The news certainly fell on the family as a storm. In truth, the word cancer itself looks like a bomb that destroys everything.
Just the fact of mentioning this terrible word implies loss, danger and death. Cancer leads to death and puts an end to every beautiful thing.
A small tumour is able to put a whole family in turmoil. The human being is so weak but full of pride, arrogance, stubbornness, and self- esteem!

The whole family would start a war against a small enemy but mortal, ruthless and merciless. An enemy that might kidnap their beloved mother. An enemy that had defeated science and human being despite his biological and artificial intelligence.

Amina stayed calm and didn’t show any fear and her Two sons and daughters didn’t sleep that night even though they did their best to appear strong and self confident.

Two weeks after, Amina started her radiotherapy treatment. She had to have a daily session except on weekends in addition to some chemotherapy once a week despite her advanced age.

The real suffering had just started with the immediate side effects of the treatment. In fact, pain, loss of appetite, loss of hair, loss of weight, loss of taste, etc became Amina’s companions especially at night when the darkness reached its zenith and met the horrible darkness of her mortal disease. She sometimes blamed herself for having decided to start the treatment and said that she would stop the whole process. One morning, she looked at the mirror and was shocked how her face changed to the worst and deteriorated. The illness was ravaging each part in her body and was determined to defeat time and hope. She sometimes grew nervous and rebellious but her family were almost aware of her reaction and tried to stay patient and calm.

She was kept under intensive care three times because she almost fainted and lost her strengths. Each time she was put under intensive care, her family thought it was the end and depression and doubt grew again. Fortunately, she survived and showed a strong will to go further in her battle.

She felt sorry about what she had caused to the family from worry and sadness to the financial cost they had had to pay for her medical treatment.

Amina quickly recovered her pure faith and will power and promised herself to stay positive as she had always been. Even her doctor and nurses were amazed by her steady mood and impressive determination. After four months the diagnoses showed that the tumour had been reduced by 30 %. Such a fact presented a turning point in the battle and the first light of hope to the victory although some of her family members stayed sceptical.
The treatment went on and Amina was responsive to the doctor’s effort.

After seven months, Amina defeated her tumour and opened the doors to a new life full of joy, hope and faith. The killing tumour disappeared from her body and joy reigned over her family. She overcame her suffering and gave hope to millions of people who are suffering of the mortal illness.

Hope and only hope until the last breath of our life.
