Expressions to avoid in communication (2) ‘Shut up’

Example:

Shut up and do your homework!

Common Use:

This phrasal verb is usually used to ask someone to stop talking or making a noise.

Why we should avoid it:

  • informal   
  • sounds violent and rude.
  • doesn’t show any respect for those to whom the speech is addressed.

Note:

It can be used between friends as a way of kidding.
