ON THE ROAD TO EXTINCTION

A new leader was elected thanks to his bright reputation as an honest and brave person who could save his tribe from poverty and extinction. In fact, this tribe used to earn its living from hunting and growing crops and people were eager to sacrifice their lives to bring dignity and pride to their tribe as their grandparents did and assure a better future for their children. They needed a true leader who would put an end to the process of mismanagement and injustice that had weakened their beloved tribe for decades and made it a target for unknown invaders. The ancestors devoted their souls to face the neighbouring tribes greed and save their own pride and identity.

In fact, people had been suffering from unfair distribution of income under the rule of the previous leader and felt working to the advantage of few lucky idle families with unfair privileges. Moreover, people who dare to claim some rights faced imprisonment and some heavy punishments.

To defy the challenge, the new leader who was well aware of the expectations of his people, decided to formulate a strategy to fulfill the commitment he had already given. He chose some counselors from his friends and asked their opinion concerning the suitable ruling approach to follow.

The first one suggested a policy based on some educational reform aiming at fighting illiteracy and ignorance and righting the situation and findong new income resources. The second counselor was at odds with the first one and insisted on a strict approach to protect the tribe security and stability by qualifying more warriors and producing more weapons. The third one, a cunning person from the lucky elite, pressed on looking for some foreign assistance from the strong neighbouring tribes that would help them defend their tribe from exterior threats and provide some advice concerning the ruling process and the satisfaction of the needs of people. The new leader opted to the third one and kept the third counselor as the closest one. The situation inside the tribe got worse and the exterior advice became instructions and the assistance turned to loans that cut a huge part from the tribe income. People were forced to work harder and paid more taxes to the leader who developed his own fortune and lived with his lucky friends isolated from the ordinary inhabitants. His best counselor appointed some guards and spies to assure the respect of law and even gave them more authority and advantages to avoid any uprising. Any protest was seen as an attempt to outset the leader and threat to the stability of the tribe. The values of sacrifice, love, and patriotism wore off and eerie  selfishness and opportunism reigned.

Many people attempted to protest but quickly got punished without trial.  People, secretly, started leaving the place and looked for another shelter in the neighbouring tribes and they chose the darkest nights to abscond hell. After years, the tribe became deserted and the leader found himself a slave in the neighbouring tribe that used to be his ally.
